Since we only launched recently in the USA
there are some questions sent to us to which
there are no direct answers on the FAQ page.

Here are some of them:

do these gas cards come from and how can the gas companies do this...losing much profit are not like them ? have they entered into a contract with you...to perhaps split bid payments that are made to you?
how long are you in business?
---------------------------------------------------

Hello Luvdoves!

Thank you for writing.

We are totally independent from whatever gas company.

Here's how it works:

We buy a cash card at the gas station to the value of say, $500.

Then we put it up for auction but we maintain a 'reserve'.

The reserve always is the cost of the card ($500 in this case).

To get the cost of the card back, we charge admin fees.
This is most of the time $2 per bid.

To get our $500 back, we need 250 bids each bringing us
$2 admin fees, so the reserve for this auction would be 250 bids.
You cannot see how many bids have been entered but
a countdown appears as soon as the auction has reached
the final 20 bids before it reaches the reserve.

As soon as we have attained the reserve, the auction
closes in 48 hours. A new countdown appears on the
site and in your members area, so you can see how much
time you have left to enter bids in that auction.

Now if members keep on bidding in the auction, all admin fees
paid during the 48 hours countdown are our profit. If nobody
bids during the 48 hours (which has happened) we don't make
a profit, but not a loss either.

Luckily we normally make a profit, sometimes smaller than
other times but it has proven that this is fun for everyone.

We have been in business since June 2006. We are a registered
company in Australia where we started out. We have conducted
over 100 auctions down there and found it was time to
open up to the USA market.

Hello,

The money we deposit to make a bid, is it returned to our Paypal account immediately if our bid is not successful?  Can we withdraw if we wish?
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Victor!

Thanks for writing.

Here's how it works:

You fund your internal account via PayPal with, say $20.
This is a real time deposit and happens instantly.

Each bid you enter attracts an admin fee of $2.

Let's say you enter 4 bids - 4 x $2 is deducted from your
internal balance which is now at $12.

If you are the succesful bidder at the end of the auction
you have invested $8 and become the owner of the
auctioned card. The only thing you are required to pay
in addition to your admin fees already paid is the value
of the successful bid.

Let's assume that the card you bid on had a value of
$100 and that your successful bid was $8.20.

Your total cost to obtain the $100 card has now been
$8 admin fees plus $8.20 bid = $16.20.
Pretty good deal I'd say. :)

Your balance stays at $12 but can be returned
to your PayPal account if you wish. All you have to do
is cancel your membership in your member profile
and we refund immediately.

You can cancel membership at any time and will
receive a refund of your internal balance.

How do I really know if people are getting these gas cards?

Thanks BD

Hi again Brian!

My apologies for delayed reply to your second email.

I actually was a bit surprised with your question, because
since we built up our membership in Australia from June 2006
till now to over 13,000, we never have received that question.

We must have presented ourselves well enough so the question
has never been raised.

But hey... it is a good one. There are a lot of scams
out there that take your money and run and I don't mind
you asking.

Anyway, I had a little bit of a problem with my answer because
I could have given you email addresses of successful bidders
to verify that they had received the cards, but that could
have been fake. Same as testimonials (we don't get a lot
for the reason of privacy), they could also have been fake ones.

Until I got an idea....

We send our cards as registered mail by Australia Post
here in Australia. Firstly because sometimes the value
of the cards can be as high as $2,500 and secondly
we want to have proof that the card has been received.

So, I pulled out a few receipts, spread them on my keyboard
and the result is below.

Highest Unique Bids Auctions

There is no better evidence I guess. We have over a hundred
of these, but I think these 7 will be enough to satisfy you.

I trust I have convinced you of our sincerity and look forward to be able
to welcome you as a member soon.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for writing back!

Gas Card Auctions is based on the "Highest Unique Bid"
(HUB) type of auction system. The HUB is the one bid
that is both the highest and unique. Highest by the fact
of it being of the greatest value of all bids. Unique by the
fact that no one else has bid the same amount.

You can keep track of all your bids from within your member's
area. Sign in to your account and click on "bidding history". It
is there that you can view the "status" of all your bids. There
are three types of status' listed under that heading:

1) HIGHEST UNIQUE = That bid is currently HUB.
2) UNIQUE = That bid is unique but not currently the highest.
3) (blank) = That bid is neither highest nor unique.

You will also be notified by email when the status of one of
your bids changes.

As an auction progresses, the HUB status can change hands
many times. That is why we recommend entering multiple bids.
Many of our members have developed strategies for improving
their chances by entering bids at specific increments. Instead
of entering bids only at the one cent ($.01) increment, they
enter bids at say five cent ($.05) increments. This spreads out
their bids and saves them money. Read more about this at:

Since the maximum allowed bid in any auction is usually the
first one to loose the HUB status, it is best to place your next
bids at lower values. It is interesting to note that, as the HUB
changes from one bidder to the next, it continually drives the
value of HUB down. This is how our members are able to buy
these Cash Cards at very low prices.

Each auction closes 48 hours after the reserve has been met.
The reserve is the number of bids needed to cover the value
of the card being auctioned. You can view the progress of

Since the USA auction has only been running for a short time,
each auction is progressing at a slower pace than the Aussie
sister site. If you are interested, we offer a "Referral Rewards"
program that will add two free bids to your account for every
new member you refer. These free bids will show up in your
account as if you deposited $4.00 to your balance. Check out
the details in your member's account under the "referrals" button
to the left.

Referral rewards is a great way to give yourself a bigger balance
to bid with as well as speeding up the progress of each auction.
The sooner an auction closes, the sooner you could own one of
the Cash Cards.

To recap, keep track of your bids from within your member's area
and be ready to enter another bid when or if your HUB status is
knocked off by another bidder. Develop your own strategy for the
bid increment you use and check back often to view it's status.
Keep in mind that a "UNIQUE" status could become the HUB at a
later time. Relax and have fun!

Thank you for being a Gas Card Auctions member.

Best Regards,
